Principles of single combat with Viking sword and shield.
Max attendants: 24
Requirements: Anyone with a basic understanding of foot work and measure and the ability to control a single sword is welcome to the seminar. The class will primarily address Viking re-enactors who want to expand on reconstructed period swordfighting. Any student is well advised to train his shield shoulder prior to the class.
Equipment: Fencing mask, wooden, nylon or steel single sword simulator and a flat wooden center-gripped round shield with iron boss and edge re-enforcement (raw hide). MINIMUM diameter: 80 cm. The techniques do NOT work for smaller shields. In fact, they work best with a 90 cm diameter. Depending on construction and material the weight of a shield may be anything between 3kg and 4.5 kg.
We will explore tactics and techniques with big center-gripped round shields based on suitable sources and hands-on experimentation.
The shield techniques require well-trained shoulder muscles, however, nothing that requires exagerated work-out. Any participant should train his shield shoulder and back muscles every second day for a few minutes in the weeks prior to the event. Otherwise you will not make it through the three hour class!! Please take this advice seriously to have maximum fun!
Optional equipment:
- light glove for sword hand
- neck protection (collar, gorget or inline hockey neck protector)
- body protection (leather fencing jacket, gambeson or the like)
If you want to experiment with random attacks or do sparring (optional), the following additional gear is advisable:
- appropriate swordhand glove or gauntlet
- lower arm guards
- knee protection
- lower leg protection
It will be up to you how heavily you actually gear up but if you have the stuff, bring it along anyway. Free play will be optional and is just a small part of the class. Most of the time you will not even need to wear gloves.
