Ja, jävlar i mig har man inte slutligen hittat henne, Mars eller Makalös. Välbevarad var hon enligt TV-nyheterna och dykaren yrade lycksaligt om potentialen för fynd av kläder och textil och allt annat trevligt.

Det roliga med Mars, till skillnad från våra tidigare kända sjunkna krigskepp, är att hon i varje fall gick till botten med flaggan i topp. Kronan han ju inte göra mycket innan hon strök med i en krutexplosion, Vasa var ju, som alla vet, lite av ett fuskbygge som sjönk patetiskt tidigt.

Men Mars gick under i strid mot den samlade dansk-lybska flottan. Jacob Bagge, svensk amiral, var ute och kryssade med det nya flaggskeppet tillsammans med två andra skepp när man siktade den fientliga flottan. Jacob Bagge hade året innan varit med och skjutit de första skotten i det nordiska sjuårskriget, 1563, när en dansk eskader från Bornholm gick till attack mot den kraftigt eskorterade friarkonvojen som Erik hade skickat ut. Då hade Jacob tagit hem en storseger. Nu var han lite väl styv i korken och beordrade attack. Men om man skall se till hur Royal Navy kom att strida under sina glansdagar får man väl tänka att Jacob i varje fall hade gjort Nelson stolt.

Det gick som det gick. Fienden kunde till slut omringa Mars och äntra henne. Men det tog två dygns strid innan dess. Sedan exploderade krutförrådet. Man kan ju undra om det inte var så att svenskarna avsiktligt antände krutförrådet för att förhindra att Mars föll i danska händer.
