Den Irländska varghunden som den ser ut i dag härstammar från 1800-talet, enligt rasens egna rasstandard. Dock har liknande hundar funnit sedan långt tillbaka.

Förr var det vanligare än idag med att var ras användes till sin sak, idag är de flesta hundar sällskapshundar med sidointressen som tex jakt, längre tillbaka så var tex vakthundar enabrt till för att vakta, och man valde således ut och avlade på de som passade bäst för det område man ville ha dem till, härav dagens alla raser..

Har själv två Bearded collies, den rasen är belagd till ca 1540-talet, men de såg inte ut riktigt på samma sätt då som de gör idag. En ras som inte verkar ha förändrats mycket är Farohunden som man ser på avbildningar i det gamla Egypten, den ser fortfarande precis likadan ut! Lite häftigt tycker jag..

Angående småhundar, som framförallt hölls av rika damer som sällskap, spana in "Damen med Enhörningen", väven alltså. Hennes lilla hund påminner till stor del om tex cavalier king charles spaniels av idag.

På den tiden vi hade en rasande trevlig svart storpudelhane och vi var aktiva "medeltidare" fick Gösta Pudel hänga med ibland.

"Vår moderna Grand Danois har enligt nutida kynologer fått sin form i Tyskland. Grand Danois är en ädel, lugn och värdig hund. En hundvärldens Apollo. Den är trogen sin familj och håller en viss distans till främlingar. Förfäderna till dag- ens eleganta Grand Danois var stora, tunga och ganska klumpiga stridshundar som kom till Mellaneuropa från öster under de keltiska folkvandringarna. Germanska folkstammar använde dessa stridshundar som vakthundar vid sina borgar. Även under romarnas erövringståg mot Gallien och Germanien fördes dessa doggar mot norr. Romarnas hundar kallades molosserhundar och kan liknas något vid dagens rottweiler. Som stridshundar och jakthundar var de mycket effektiva. Från 1400-talet förekom export av jaktdoggar från Storbritannien till kontinenten. Dessa hundar var för stora och tunga för att klara av storviltsjakten. Därför började man korsa in stora vinthundar, huvud- sakligen föregångare till dagens irländska varghundar och skotska hjorthundar. I Europa började så en rad furstar bedriva avel och avelsarbetet lade grunden till vår moderna Grand Danois."

Frågan är då om detta är en medeltida ras?
Och varför har vissa av dem öron som står rakt upp?

Spetshundarna är alla av en mycket gammal härstamning. Lapphundar, jämthundar, gråhundar (norsk älhund grå) Finnspetsar etc... De återfinns redan från jägarstenålder.
vinthundar fanns och det finns ett fräckt västgötafynd från järnålder, där en kvinna begravts med två stora långbenta hundar. Henne muckade man knappast med ostraffat.
Men även små hundar är belagda från åtminstone 1000-talet. I Sigtuna material fann vi när vi gjorde B-kursen i Osteologi, ben från en hund som var stor som en Papillon, eller rentav något mindre! 1000-1200 tal. Vi döpte den till "muffen".
Så små och stora hundar har funnits länge.
