Din släkt fick hjälpa dig, och säkert kunde mer inflytelserika bönder hjälpa en mindre bemedlad bonde för att få mer "goodwill" och stöd. Vi vet så fruktansvärt lite om bondesamhällets funktioner, men det vi vet pekar på ett starkt lokalsamhälle som inte blandade in kungamakt och annan överhet i onödan.
Skulle man klämma åt fredlösa och rövare torde man säkert ha anordnat ett hederligt "Posse". Man hade ju inget emot att puckla på fogdedrängar om de blev för besvärliga, så varför skulle man vara mild mot fredlösa?
Som sagt, rätten satt i spjutstångs ände, men det fanns antagligen mekanismer inom bondesamhället som på något vis hanterade situationen utifrån gammal sedvanerätt.

Samerna hade länge så kallade "kåtadomstolar" där de själva skipade rättvisa och som inte sågs med blida ögon av statens rättsväsende. Bönderna hade tillgång till ett eget officiellt rättsorgan, tinget, som de nog visste att bruka.

I staden fanns stadsvakten, var jobb mest var att se till att folk var innomhus efter att det ringts 'i vård' och att eldar var släckta på grund av brandrisken. Eftersom samhället var mycket samanbundet på denna tid var det nog så att familjemn till den förorättade såg till att den anklagade kom till doms. Hade man ingan anhöriga i trakten... var man trolige en löskeman eller kringresande. Dessa hade en väldigt svag rättslig ställning och sågs med misstro av folk. Hände något i trakten var det dessa som fick skulden. Undersökningar av medeltida rätt visar att det var otroligt mycket större risk att bli dömd till döds om man var utsocknes. Kom man från bygden hände det sällan.

längre ut på landsbygden var det hårda bud. Där låg lag i spjutstångs ände.
