Medeltida siden

Den heter The Silk industry of renaissance venice.

In my Agnes Geijer book about textile history it says;
A lot of (early) chinese silks were very narrow and for some reason the Han-dynasty chinese had also officially decided that the patterned silk cloth should be 2 ch´íh 2ts´un (about 50 cm ~ 20 inches) wide. These fabrics could conatain up to 8000 threads with up to about 160 varp threads per centimeter.
After the Han-dynasty home made production of silk cloth could be as narrow as 8 inches, used as fabric for banners in europe in the 16-hundreds.
When the Sassanid of Iran started growing silkworms and producing silk fabrics they changed the width to atleast 130 cm, likely since that was about as wide as they could manage in the looms they constructed. ~700-800 AD
From around the year 1000 Byzantine and islamic silk wefts are known that measure up to 2,5 meters.
The diasper fabrics of Italy from mid 1200-hundreds to early 1400-hundreds were about 115 to 120 cm wide, likely a regulated measurement to insure quality. During the 1400-hundreds the width narrows down to about 60-70 cm.
A side note here is that the Ming dynasty didn't export silk in any quantities from about the years 1300 to about 1700. Most silks in mainland Europe in that time is most likely then either Islamic, Byzantine or European in origin. Russia however traded furs into silk with mongolian traders and could by that way get a hold of chinese silks. In 1654 Peter the Great sends an embassy to Beijing and thus opens up the possibileties of direct trade once more. Due to the Russian Swedish wars quite a bit of those silks used as flags have ended up here in Sweden. Those fabrics are between 50 to 70 cm wide silk damast, a calculation based on the flags here reveals that at least 14000 meters of fabric have been used just for those. And another few thousand meters of to be addd for the plainer types of silks. And this is just a fragment of the whole trade between Russia and China.

Och:

At school I found a copy of Scandinavian Weaving Magazine where they talk a little about Ming and Tang dynasty silk production in an article.
According to that article (pages 14-16 in issue 1 for the year 2005) a Ming dynasty loom is around 3,9 meters high and 5,1 meters long. This is the type of loom that those brocaded silk flags that I mentioned earlier are made on. A normal days production of richly patterned silk with multiple colours is about 10 cm!
The article also quotes the book Land of Silk by Wei Liming where the author has made some calculations based on taxregisters from the years 742-755 AD. The numbers presented are:
At least 3,7 million men payed taxes in the form of silks, likely at least as many people if not more were involved in silk production.
Based on the numbers of silk payed as taxes at least 2,5 million hectare of land was cultivated with at least 370 million mullberry trees in use.
As a bit of a side note, the article also mentions a chinese dress made in the first century AD. It was 128 cm long with arms that were 190 cm long, all made in silk and weighed only 49 gram.
