Old Norse

As a Swede, I always feel sort of flattered when people want to learn Swedish [:D]

A word of warning, though:

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"><i>Originally posted by Vinlandr</i>

As I get better at it, I will incorporate more Old Norse words to make it more authentic as I go along.
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

If you do this (the way I imagine it from your post) you will be speaking modern Swedish with a couple of non-Swedish words thrown in, which will NOT be more similar to the language of the vikings than modern Swedish is. Swedish has developed from Old Norse, but it has lost a great deal of grammatical and syntactical complexity in that process. The result will be the lingustic equivalent of wearing a perfect reconstruction of a viking tunic, made from handspun and handwoven wool, along with jeans, sneakers, and a horned helmet, i.e. authentic is not quite the word...[:)]

Just go for Swedish for now, is my advice, and that knowledge will help if you want to move on to Old Norse in the future. I hope you'll succeed in your studies and won't get annoyed to death with the weird spelling and such [;)]

Good luck!

Annika, thanks, I will follow your advice. I don't at present anticipate becoming annoyed with wierd spellings, but I'll tell you, before long I may be looking around for a Swedish keyboard so as to speed up typing and skip memorizing all the ctl-alt-whatevers to get the right characters in the Swedish words.[;)]

Why buy a new keyboard [?]
Just switch the keyboard setting (if your using Win2k it's just one click) and stick Post-It squares cut to shape onto your current keys and mark the ones you need until you have the swedish keyboard memorized.

Angus, I'll check into that, thanks. I imagine WinXP which I am running probably has the same capability.

I am fluent in both English and Swedish, and I type fast in both, but I recently caved and bought a Swedish keyboard to use for my university course (which is in Swedish). I really tried to get used to using my regular keyboard, but it is a total pain in the you-know-what because the other symbols are displaced (still there, but moved to another spot to make room for the å, ä, ö keys, so that the symbols on your keyboard don't correspond with what comes up on your monitor) to make room for more letters. You are forever missing three symbols, and accidentally hitting the wrong keys etc. Then, if you want to get back to normal, you have to change the setting back again every time you go to use it for English, so as to replace the symbols you lost. This is completely eliminated with a Swedish keyboard, and even at that, I get more keys on one of them, for things like £, ½, and a few others that I use quite often when typing in Swedish. It may actually be a worthy investment if it's not too expensive for you, and you are really hellbent on learning Swedish. Good luck, whatever you decide on!

Tyra, thanks. I will probably work with Angus' suggestion for starters, and as I gain proficiency, I'll look into the Swedish keyboard. My oldish computer utilizes the keyboard jack on the back of the chassis, but I see that a lot of newer keyboards plug in via a USB port. I am curious to know if Windows XP or other operating systems in use would automatically recognize the unplugging of an English keyboard and the plugging in of a Swedish one, and switch to the appropriate keyboard software on its own.

I use XP, and have had no problems switching, but like I said, once you have the Swedish keyboard, you needn't switch back and forth. The problem lies in the English one not having enough keys, whereas the Swedish one has all the extra keys, including all the ones that are on the English one. Once you have that one installed you can do all the functions you need for both English and Swedish without having to change the language setting and so on, wheras th English keyboard can support English fully and Swedish "sort of". In W98 and up you can change the language setting quite easily without having to change the keyboard, but rather, from your screen. T.

Thanks, Tyra, I didn't catch that the first time that once the Swedish keyboard is installed, one can do both from the same keyboard. That sounds better and better.

Well, I have happily discovered that I can open up the Swedish keyboard in XP and have an icon on my taskbar with which I can swap back and forth quickly between Swedish and English keyboards. I will temporarily print out an image of a Swedish keyboard for now, and then get an actual one as I can. Thanks for the help and the advice, folks!

The reason I answered in swedish was that Arild wrote to me in swedish. However, a summary:
Arild thought posting an article in it's entirety as I had did was against the forum rules. I should hav had some quotes and then a link (or somethign like that). I answered that it wasn't an article but a book review and that since I get them by mail subscription I didn't know where to link except giving people my email so I could send it to them, which I hadn't time to do. But since I apparently had done something wrong I deleted that entry.
